AP to have 10 new circles for minor irrigation

Hyderabad, June 17 The Andhra Pradesh Government delegated financial powers to the District Collectors to sanction minor irrigation works and create 10 new circles under minor irrigation.

A decision to this effect was taken by the Chief Minister, Dr Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, at a review meeting with the officials of Andhra Pradesh Irrigation Development Corporation (APSIDC) here on Tuesday.

The Managing Director of APSIDC could also sanction works valued up to Rs 10 lakh, the Chief Minister said in the meeting. The corporation was also permitted to take up recruitment for 30 vacancies, according to a release.

The officials informed Dr Reddy that APSIDC had initiated works to being five lakh acres in the State under irrigation. The ayacut irrigated under the lift irrigation schemes was doubled from 1.87 lakh acres to 3.86 lakh acres. The corporation had Rs 1,200 crore works on hand and works worth an additional Rs 600 crore would also be taken up.

Under the AP Irrigation and Livelihood Project, the medium irrigation projects which were older than 20 years would be modernised. For the funds required the corporation had tied up with Japan Bank for International Cooperation and the State Government, the officials said.

Under the World Bank aided project, hydrologically feasible tanks were identified out of which 482 tanks would be restored. By 2008-09, about 15,000 tanks would be recovered with an estimated cost of Rs 165 crore, they added.
