T.E. Raja Simhan

Chennai, June 18 The Southern Railway has a surplus of 232 metre gauge coaches, which have become redundant following the conversion of railway lines to broad gauge. The SR is now awaiting instructions from the Railway Board for disposing these surplus coaches, according to an SR official.

In the past some of the metre gauge coaches were sent to countries such as Bangladesh, Myanmar and Tanzania. However, there is not much demand from these countries.

As on March 31, the SR had 513 metre gauge coaches. Many of them have since been sent to Madurai and Tiuchi divisions, Western Railways and Rites Ltd. Today, SR has 232.

In 2007-08, the SR condemned 43 metre gauges. Of this 17 coaches were dismantled at the Golden Rock Shops in Tiruchi. The others dismantled in Madurai and Tiruchi.

“This year, we do not know how many coaches will be dismantled,” the SR official said.
