Travancore Titanium to get Rs 3-cr Govt aid

The question of raising bus fares would be discussed at the meeting of the ruling LDF before taking a decision on it.

Thiruvananthapuram, June 18

The Kerala Government will extend an assistance of Rs 3 crore to the State-owned Travancore Titanium Products Ltd (TTP) to help it tide over the financial crisis it has been facing for some time now.

This was decided at a meeting of the State Cabinet on Wednesday. It may be noted that TTP, which is engaged in the production of titanium dioxide, has been going through tough days in the wake of a steep increase in the price of sulphur, one of the key raw materials. It had affected the company’s production over the last couple of months.

Free ration

The Chief Minister, Mr V.S. Achuthanandan, told newspersons after the meeting that the Cabinet had also decided to give free ration to fishermen of mechanised boats, which had suspended operations in the wake of the 45-day ban on trawling that came into effect from the midnight of June 14.

Free ration will also be available to peeling workers and allied workers at fishing harbours. The trawling ban is resorted to during the monsoon period every year with a view to preventing depletion of fish stock. The Chief Minister said that the ban on recruitment of staff in aided colleges would be lifted as per the recommendation of the high-level committee constituted to look into the matter.

There were 642 posts lying vacant now and recruitments would be made to those which had not been stayed by the High Court.

He said that the question of raising bus fares would be discussed at the meeting of the ruling Left Democratic Front (LDF) before taking a decision on it.
