SEZs/EOUs open house in Mumbai tomorrow

The Export Promotion Council for EOUs) and SEZs (EPCES) is organising an open house of export oriented units , SEZ units and special economic zone developers on June 20 at Mumbai with the Commerce Secretary, Mr Gopal K. Pillai, chairing the conclave.

The open house will be attended by development commissioners of special economic zones, senior officials of the Ministry of Commerce, the Ministry of Finance, the Director-General of Foreign Trade, the Director-General (Export Promotion), the Department of Revenue, the CBEC, the CBDT as well as officials of the RBI and the Maharashtra Goverment.

Augment exports

In a statement issued here, the Director-General of the Council, Mr L.B. Singhal, said here that the open house assumes significance in the backdrop of the crucial contribution of the EOUs and SEZs in augmenting exports, providing employment, attracting investment and creating dedicated infrastructure. Exports from EOUs and SEZs in the last five years have gone up from Rs. 33,647 crore to Rs. 1,91,638 crore.

In 2007-08, exports from SEZs have gone up to Rs 66,638 crore from Rs. 34,787 crore in the previous fiscal, showing a growth of 93 per cent and export from EOUs have gone up to Rs. 1,25,000 crore (Rs 69,965 crore), showing a growth of 82 per cent.

The contribution of EOUs/SEZ in the total export of India has gone up from 13 per cent in 2002-03 to 31 per cent in the year 2007-08.
