Call to tap potential of voluntary sector

Our Bureau

Kochi, June 19

There is a lot of unutilised potential in the voluntary sector which needs to be harnessed by the country’s growing economy, said Dr Syeda Hameed, Member of the Planning Commission.

She was delivering the inaugural address at the two-day national conference on the voluntary sector’s role in India’s economic development, jointly organised by the Institute of Small Enterprises and Development (ISED), Planning Commission and the International Network on Small and Medium Enterprises in Local Economic Development, India (Insled-India).

Economic growth obviously has positive and negative consequences and the challenge under the Eleventh Plan is to ensure enclosing this growth.

It needs the coordinated effort from various sectors to ensure this. It is to address this challenge that the National Policy on Voluntary Sector was announced by the Planning Commission, a press release issued here has said.

Dr Mridul Eapen, Member, Kerala State Planning Board, delivered the keynote address at the inaugural session.

The session was chaired by Dr Kamal Nayan Kabra, Chairman of the Institute where Dr Satish Kumar, South India Chief of UNICEF, Dr Savita Sharma, Deputy Director General of Central Statistical Organisation, and Mr A.R. Muralidharan, General Manager SIDBI, were the speakers.

UNICEF provided an overview of its relationship with the voluntary sector at the conference. Over 100 delegates from across the country are participating in the conference.
