AP Akademi plans regional science congress

Our Bureau

Hyderabad, June 19

The Andhra Pradesh Akademi of Sciences (APAS), the oldest among State science bodies, has decided to ‘clone’ the Indian Science Congress at the State level.

The Honorary Secretary, APAS, Prof B. Satyanarayana, said the State Science Congress would be held annually. Details of the organisation etc. were being worked out.

Technology day

He made the announcement at the national technology day lecture, organised by the Akademi on Thursday at the National Geophysical Research Institute (NGRI).

Dr G. Madhavan Nair, Chairman, Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), who delivered the technology day lecture suggested that the Akademi think in terms of organising the meeting in Telugu language.

Though there were practical difficulties, since more than 60 per cent of the people live in rural areas, speak the local language and the need to be stimulated into science, it could be worth a try, he said.

The annual Indian Science Congress, which is the largest congregation of Indian scientists has been conducted for the last 95 years in different cities across the country.

It is organised by the Kolkata-based, Indian Science Congress Association with support of various scientific bodies, universities etc.

Trees and Scientific Output

What have trees to do with scientific output?

The NGRI has 16,000 trees on its campus and it is working hard to reach the 20,000-mark soon, said its Director, Dr V.P. Dimri.

“We are providing our scientists oxygen rich air on the campus.

“This has in a way helped increase the output, especially in the number of scientific papers published in international journals”, Dr Dimri told the gathering of the Akademi.

In fact, the lab, part of the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), is among the top one per cent in the world institutes in the area of earth sciences, which includes NASA (National Aeronautics and Space Administration) and NOAA (National Oceananic and Atmospheric Administration), both of US as well, he said.
