Volvo Ocean Race: Meet reviews arrangements for Kochi stopover

Kochi, June 19 The countdown has commenced for the prestigious India stopover of the Volvo Ocean Race at the Kochi port during December 3-13, 2008.

Meetings were held between representatives of the Volvo Event Management Co UK, Yachting Association of India, Indian event managers, marketing agencies, the Cochin Port Trust and Kerala Tourism to review the arrangements which are in progress and finalise the future course of action for hosting the race stopover.

The Cochin Port Trust has already initiated action for upgrading and developing the roads and public amenities at the north end of Willingdon Island to host the boats and participants who will be stopping over in India for the first time.

Development of land and covered areas for housing the hospitality pavilions of the race organisers, racing teams, sponsors and for exhibitions are all being undertaken, the Cochin Port Trust said. Dr Malav Shroff, former Olympian and Manager of Ocean Blue Boating, an event management company, participated in the discussion. They are managing the Cochin Port Stopover.

Race village

There have been suggestions for designing a race village, which also came in for discussion, while special berthing arrangements required for the race boats, berthing requirements for other boats and yachts visiting the port during race period were also considered.

The modalities of the marketing plan and various sponsorship and advertisements opportunities related to the event were also discussed.
