Our Bureau

Mumbai, June 20 Larsen and Toubro has said that its heavy engineering division had crossed Rs 1,000 crore of order booking for hi-tech equipment & systems in two months of the first quarter of 2008-09.

Major local contracts include a large order for power plant equipment from Coastal Gujarat Power Ltd (CGPL), a subsidiary of Tata Power Company Ltd, and another large contract from HPCL Mittal Energy Ltd, Bhatinda for critical reactors.

The CGPL contract includes supply of surface condensers, feed water heaters & de-aerators for five units each of 800 MW for the mega power plant being set up at Mundra in Gujarat. This would be the first ultra mega power plant in the country with the latest supercritical technology for an 800 MW configuration. The equipment to be supplied by L&T forms a critical portion of the regenerative cycle.

The HPCL Mittal contract is for three critical reactors for their Punjab refinery project at Bhatinda. It will be made from advanced technology steel containing chromium, molybdenum and vanadium with plate thickness up to 165 mm.

Export orders

The export orders include supply of coke drums to Kuwait National Petroleum Company (KNPC), Kuwait, high pressure heat exchangers to Petroleo Brasileiro, Brazil, ammonia converters to UHDE, Germany and reactors to PTT Asahi Chem Co. Ltd, Thailand.

The Kuwait Petroleum contract is for four coke drums required for KNPC’s ‘Clean Fuel Project 2020’. L&T is manufacturing 22 hydrocracker and atmospheric residue desulphurization (ARDS) reactors.

The equipment will be manufactured at L&T’s facilities in Powai and Hazira.

Mr M.V. Kotwal, Senior Executive Vice-President (Heavy Engineering Division), said the demand for such critical hi-tech equipment in the country as well as abroad was on the rise. “We are expanding our manufacturing facilities at Hazira and setting up a new facility at Oman, to cater to the rising demand,” he said.
