Our Bureau Thiruvananthapuram, June 20 The Kerala Government, as part of its efforts to strengthen the coir sector, has decided to open 1,000 new outlets for selling coir and coir products. The programme will cover all the panchayats in the State and the outlets will be opened jointly by the public sector undertakings in the coir sector and selected cooperative societies, said Mr G. Sudhakaran, Minister for Coir Development. He said here on Friday that as of now the coir industry depended mainly on exports. However, studies conducted by various agencies had found that there was immense scope for expanding the domestic market. It is in this context that the Coir Department had taken the initiative to develop the domestic market. Apart from the 1,000 sales outlets planned within the State, showrooms would be opened in the other states as well, the Minister said. The Cooperative Department has selected 532 to cooperative societies to implement the programme. As many as 235 sales outlets will be opened in the first phase and the Coir Corporation has been entrusted with the task in Kannur, Kasargod, Wayanad, Kozhikode and Malappuram districts, while Foam Mattings India will help open the outlets in Alappuzha, Pathanamthitta, Kollam and Thiruvananthapuram districts. The Minister said that this would mark the beginning of a vigorous campaign to ensure that every household in the State bought and used at least one coir product. This would also serve as a new model for the marketing of products of the other traditional industries, he added. The State-level inauguration of the programme will be held at Payyanur on June 21.
