Bangalore, June 20

Manipal Hospital Bangalore and Rotary International have said they would jointly sponsor heart surgeries of 40 underprivileged children with congenital heart disease (CHD).

Sixteen children have benefited from one of the country’s biggest Community and Matching Grant Project so far, Manipal Hospital said in a statement.

Mithun (7) from Mangalore, Jaipratap (2) from Salem, Mohammed Shahid (5), Manjesh (10), son of a farm labourer couple from and Hemant (10) from Mandya have undergone surgery and resumed their old lives.

New life

The surgeries have infused new life into these children, said Mr O.P.Khanna, who spearheaded the project. “It gives us untold joy to see them back on their feet.”

Dr Prasad Krishnan of Cardiothoracic & Vascular Surgery at Manipal Hospital treated the children along with fellow paediatric cardiologists Dr Sreekanth Raghavan and Dr Ravi Narayan.

“More than 1.5 lakh children are born with CHD every year in India. Only about 5,000 get treated mostly with sponsorships and government aid,” Dr Krishnan said.

According to Mr Rajendra Rai, Rotary Governor District 3190, with over 10 per cent of its urban population having CHD, India is now in the middle of a CHD epidemic.
