Nishant clears last test

Bangalore, June 20

Nishant, the unmanned aerial vehicle developed by DRDO for the Army, on Thursday cleared the last test before entering mass production stage. The UAV was flight tested near Kolar, DRDO said in a release here. The present flight tests are pre-confirmatory trials before induction into services. With this, Nishant has completed the development phase and user trials, the release said. The UAV is developed by the Aeronautical Development Establishment, Bangalore, along with thr ee sister defence labs – DEAL, Dehradun; RDE(E), Pune and ADRDE, Agra. For the final test, they made four vehicles under a limited series production. Nishant is one of the few UAVs in the world in its weight class that can be catapult-launched and recovered using a parachute. It eliminates the need for a runway. Representatives of user agencies and senior defence scientists were present. —
