New Business Logistics - Railways Bombardier wins $6-m Railway order Our Bureau New Delhi, June 20 Bombardier Transportation has won a $6-million order to supply an advanced traffic management system for the Indian Railways. The contract will improve safety in the Mumbai CST-Kalyan suburban section of the Central Railway — which covers 53 km, 32 stations and offers over 1,400 services daily — as traffic controllers will be able to monitor the train traffic on a real-time basis. The system will manage train arrivals at each station every three minutes, and provide the information for rapid decision-making in case of disruption, said a release. With the new system, around three million passengers using the Central Railway line daily will receive a continuously updated, minute-by-minute countdown showing the exact train time arrival at the platform. In addition, there will be automatic multi-lingual passenger announcements on the train, bilingual displays at station entrances, and information relating to the next two incoming trains at each platform. The contract, with a value of around €4 million, is for the design, supply, installation, testing and commissioning of a traffic management system for the Central Railway in Mumbai. It is the second application of this sophisticated technology made by Bombardier for the Indian Railways. The first installation in India was in 2004 at the Western Railway section in Mumbai.
