Pune, June 20 Continuing its efforts on the IT front, the Maharashtra Government is all set to roll out the MSWAN (maharashtra state wide area network) linking the Government to the taluka level, by January 2009.

Talking to presspersons after the conclusion of the HiTech Pune event, Mr Kshatrapati Shivaji, Secretary (Information Technology), Government of Maharashtra, said there are two major projects which are being undertaken, one is the vertical connectivity from the Mantralaya to the taluka level and the second is the common services centre. The vertical connectivity project would be rolled out across the State and tenders had been floated. The project cost is Rs 104 crore and would be handled by ITI and Spanco.

He said once the vertical connectivity was achieved, the horizontal connectivity linking the different departments would also happen. Mr Shivaji said the common services centre would be based on the private-public-partnership model and would be handled by four companies, Reliance Communications, CMS, Spanco and 3i Infotech.

He said the Master Service Agreement with the four companies is expected to be signed within a month.

The areas that these companies would look into would be Spanco for Konkan and Pune, 3i Infotech for Nasik, CMS for Aurangabad and Amravati and Reliance Communications for Nagpur. Mr Shivaji said once the MSWAN was in place, it would replace the Mahanet, the existing connectivity. He added that the construction of an online portal was also under way. Dr R.A. Mashelkar, Bhatnagar Fellow and President of Global Research Alliance, in his theme address, noted that “in India, it is necessary to challenge the mind which would ensure innovation.”

He also noted that innovation was doing things differently, making a big difference and making impossible possible.

He added that the challenge was to include the excluded.
