US envoy highlights need for water treatment, recycling tech

Our Bureau

Kolkata, June 20 There is a need for water treatment and water recycling technology in order to produce clean water in India, the US Consul General, Mr Henry V. Jardine, said. India’s limited water resources are depleting rapidly even while the demand is ever increasing.

Projections show that India could be a water scarce country by 2025 when its per capita water availability could fall below the international benchmark of 1,700 cubic metres a person a year.

Mr Jardine was speaking at ‘Showcase US’ organised by the Indo-American Chamber of Commerce here on Thursday.

The total Indian market for water-related products and services is estimated to be over $1 billion.

Overall water market

The Government sector contributes a little more than 50 per cent and the rest of the business comes from the private industrial sector, he said.

The overall water market is growing at 10-12 per cent annually.

Stressing on the role of US-based companies in the development of water-related products in India, he said, “The requirement of compliance to the Safe Drinking Water Act and the Clean Water Act governing water pollution in the US has unleashed market forces that has resulted in the development of an impressive array of products and technologies on water treatment. Related technologies on water transportation, storage and instrumentation have also flourished. These products can address water-related problems in India,” he added.
