Home science curriculum to be revamped

Our Bureau

Hyderabad, June 20 Post-graduate courses in home science will be made more industry-friendly, thanks to an initiative by the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR).

The Broad Subject Matter Area Committee, a panel appointed by the council for the purpose of re-designing the curriculum is in the advanced stage of finalising the modalities for PG programmes in home sciences in universities across the country, according to Dr Maya Choudhry, Convenor of the Broad Subject Matter Area Committee.

“With a boom in sectors like retail, fashion, health and infrastructure, the demand for home science specialists has been growing. The initiative to re-design the curriculum is aimed at helping the home science graduates to cash in on the industry requirements,” she told Business Line on the sidelines of an ICAR-sponsored stakeholders’ workshop here on Friday.

Already, a draft syllabus has been framed, which will be further refined with inputs from industry, Dr Maya Choudhry, Dean, College of Home Science, Maharana Pratap University of Agriculture and Technology, Udaipur, said.

About 75 representatives from different industries, such as textiles, fashion designers, quality control and infrastructure (for interior designing) and health, are participating in the workshop.

The deliberations in the workshop would be studied by ICAR in Delhi in the last week of this month, paving way for the finalisation of curriculum, Dr Choudhry said.

All this would mean more opportunities for home science graduates, especially girls from semi-urban and rural areas as home science as a discipline attracts them more.
