More Indians from smaller cities visit Singapore

Our Correspondent

Tiruchi, June 21 Visitor arrivals to Singapore from India grew by 14 per cent during 2007 and arrivals from Tier-II cities, especially in Tamil Nadu, have shown strong growth during the year.

While visitor arrivals were highest from the four metros of Mumbai, Chennai, Delhi and Bangalore, there had been a tremendous growth in visitor arrivals from tier II cities too, said Mr Kiran Bhandari, Area Director (Southern India, Sri Lanka and Maldives), Singapore Tourism Board.

Tiruchi registered 32 per cent growth over 2006, with nearly 5,320 visitors. Visitor arrivals from Tiruchi have almost doubled since 2002. Other secondary cities in the South such as Coimbatore, Kochi and Madurai registered an average growth of 26 per cent over 2006.

“2007 was a record year for Singapore tourism, with 10 million visitor arrivals for the first time. Of this, 7.49 lakh visitors were Indians, making India the fourth-largest visitor source for the island nation.

“We anticipate a double-digit growth during 2008 too,” Mr Bhandari told a press conference here recently.

Attributing the growth to the fact that Singapore enjoyed ‘top-of-mind recall’ among Indian holidaymakers, Mr Bhandari said Indian families were a key market segment.

Focus on family

“We will continue to focus on families as our primary target by projecting new experiences to attract first-time and repeat family travel to Singapore.

“We will launch off-season travel campaigns and promote awareness about Singapore’s tourist attractions.”
