Chennai, June 22 The domestic leather industry hopes to replicate the success of the Italian industry by bringing in new technologies, business partnerships and the cluster approach to small scale development.

The Indian Finished Leather Manufacturers and Exporters Association has entered into an agreement with Associazione Conciatori, based in Santa Croce, Italy, which provides for the Italian experts to train tanners in Tamil Nadu, promote clean production technology, and explore opportunities for joint ventures and business partnerships, according to a press release from the leather manufacturers association.

A delegation of tanners from Italy will visit Tamil Nadu later this year to explore business opportunities.

Santa Croce model

Tanneries in Santa Croce operate as a cohesive cluster, with each tannery outsourcing a portion of the production to improve efficiency of operations. The tannery cluster includes various aspects like machinery, tanning, chemicals and consumable manufacture.

Santa Croce is known for producing high quality calf and goat leathers for shoe making. The products carry the ‘Made in Tuscany’ brand which is recognised worldwide. Over 400 tanneries in the region account for over a third of Italy’s leather. The annual production from these tanneries is estimated at about €2 billion (Rs 12,000 crore), with exports accounting for 50 per cent.

TN production

Over 900 tanneries in Tamil Nadu account for about 60 per cent of the total leather production in India. The leather production by these tanneries is estimated at about $1 billion (Rs 4,000 crore).

The agreement has been enabled by a programme between the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Italy, and India’s Ministry of Trade and Industry and the Ministry of Micro and Small and Medium Enterprises. The programme is implemented by the United Nations Industrial Development Organisation.
