Maize prices gain further

G. Gurumurthy

Coimbatore, June 23

Maize prices spurted yet again this week giving fresh worries to the poultry feed and starch manufacturers. The market yard prices climbed up to Rs 8,300-8,500 a tonne, Rs 500 more than the previous week’s prices.

The spot prices (production centre rates) too went up equally to Rs 9,600-9,800 a tonne. The rates quoted at the consumption centres varied between Rs 10,500-10,600 a tonne. The rate at Nizamabad was Rs 9,150 and at Davangere Rs 9,087 a tonne.

Coarse gains

According to the US Grains Council India market reports, with rising maize prices and fears on the availability of sufficient stocks to last for the next three months, the livestock and poultry sector would be compelled to think of alternative ways to reduce costs. Alternative coarser grains such as bajra, sorghum or rice could be used, with of course reduced efficiency, to bring down the costs of feed mixing.

distillers grains

Another alternative will be using the distillers grains, a by-product obtained after the ethanol manufacture which, according to the council report, contains 10-11 per cent fat and 27-28 per cent protein. With feed costs going up, the cost of production of live chicken (broiler) has also gone up to Rs 42-44 a kg.

The market risk for the live bird industry in the wake of increased production cost is also high requiring the sector to go for value-added, processed products that are relatively less directly linked to changes in farm prices.

The Chicago Board of Trade corn rates last week ended lower at $284 a tonne for July delivery.
