Strategy Sanjeev Kapoor plans quick service restaurant chain in US Alka Kshirsagar Pune, June 23 Celebrity chef Sanjeev Kapoor is planning to launch a chain of ‘quick service restaurants’ in the US by the end of 2010 and is presently working on developing and testing a range of internationally acceptable products from the Indian cuisine that will be sold through these outlets. Here recently to launch the Pune outlet of his restaurant The Yellow Chilli (TYC), Mr Kapoor also revealed that Kars Foods, the holding company for his restaurant brands, will, raise around Rs 20 crore “soon” through private equity to expand the Khazana and TYC brands in the country. Elaborating upon his plans to launch in the US, Mr Kapoor said, “We are working on product selection, and on development of equipment and vendors.” He added that the menu would be tested at a pilot that will be based at a small town in India. While the location of the chain of quick service restaurants had not yet been finalised and would be at one of the two coasts, the plan was to launch six in a single city initially, and gradually expand to 30, he said. Growth planMeanwhile, the chef has chalked out an aggressive growth plan in India, and expects to bring the upscale Khazana restaurant brand, now present only in Dubai and soon to be launched in Qatar, to at least one Indian city. Bangalore is the most likely location for this. Plans are also afoot to take this to London and New York over the next few years. Pan-India presenceTYC has also been repositioned and redefined, and with 11 outlets already operational, is soon set for a pan-India presence with restaurants poised to open in Hyderabad and Bangalore in the next few weeks. “We expect an additional 27 restaurants to be opened pan-India over the next two years, and will be examining self owned, managed as well as franchisee models,” Mr Kapoor explained.
