Cauvery Delta farmers thank CM

Thanjavur, June 24

The Cauvery Delta Farmers Welfare Association has thanked the Chief Minister, Mr M. Karunanidhi, for announcing additional sum of Rs 170 and Rs 150 per quintal over and above the Central Government price and making it Rs 1,000 and Rs 1,050 per quintal for common and fine variety of paddy respectively. A delegation of the Association led by its General Secretary, Mr S. Ranganathan, met the Chief Minister, here on Tuesday and presented a letter thanking him for announcing th e price hike. This will go a long way in improving the economy of delta farmers, it said. The delegation also thanked the Chief Minister for taking up Cauvery Modernisation Projects like new road-cum-barrage in Mayanur in Karur district, which is billed as the fist phase of inter-linking intra-state rivers, strengthening of banks of rivers, etc at a cost of Rs 700 crore. Mr Ranganathan said the increase in paddy procurement price was ‘historical’. The President of the association, Mr G. Kanakasabhai; the Vice-President, Mr V. Rajaram; the Treasurer, Mr M. Balakrishnan; joint secretaries, Mr N. Dasarathan and Mr P. Gandhipithan; called on the Chief Minister along with Mr Ranganathan.
