Call to set up ethanol plants

Our Bureau

Vijayawada, June 24

Entrepreneurs should come forward to set up more ethanol plants in the State, as it is necessary to meet the challenges of energy crisis besides helping farmers to boost their incomes, the Chief Minister, Dr Y. Rajasekhara Reddy, has said.

He was speaking at Gandepalli village in Krishna district on Tuesday after inaugurating a corn-based ethanol unit set up by the Hyderabad-based Sentini group at a cost of Rs 130 crore.

He said the corn/maize farmers in the area would benefit from the unit and production of ethanol from other sources should also be encouraged. There is great scope for setting up such units in the coastal districts, he added.

Subabul farmers represented to the Chief Minister that they were not getting a remunerative price and he promised to convene a meeting in Hyderabad and take corrective steps.

Mr Gopalakrishna, Chairman of the group, urged the Chief Minister to extend incentives, as in Maharashtra, to ethanol units, classifying them as agro-based units.
