No consensus on ‘break monsoon’

Thiruvananthapuram, June 24 Opinion is divided on whether the current lull monsoon phase in the peninsula and the northern plains pitted against the ongoing wet session in the east and northeast constitute a ‘break monsoon’ phase.

Prevailing conditions do not support a classic ‘break monsoon’, according to Mr Madhusoodanan M.S., a researcher in meteorology.

Normally, a break phase is represented in the monsoon trough retreating entirely to the foothills of the Himalayas and the monsoon westerlies blowing right up to the Tibetan plateau. This is not the case at least as of now.

Also, wind pattern continues to be southwesterly over the peninsula, which is monsoon-friendly. Another view is that a raging but lately weakening typhoon in the west Pacific and the diversion of flows could be partly responsible for the lean phase.
