Chamraj tea bags award at US expo

P.S. Sundar

Coonoor, June 26 Chamraj’s Orange Pekoe (OP) grade received the Best Tea Award under “Black Tea” category at the World Tea Expo at Las Vegas, US.

Professional tea tasters judged the entries by the brewed colour, aroma, mouth-feel and harmony. Some 200 teas from 30 companies worldwide competed.

The championship spread to hot tea and iced tea classes. The Hot Tea Class was divided into 22 different categories. “Chamraj OP won in this surviving stiff competition from Darjeeling, Assam, Sri Lanka, China and Indonesia,” said Mr T.G.B. Pinto, Director, who received the award at the Expo.

“These teas are manufactured in our ISO and HACCP certified Chamraj and Korakundah factories. We are the largest manufacturer-exporter in Nilgiris,” said Mr D. Hegde, Director, United Nilgiri Tea Estates Co Ltd, a unit of Amalgamations Group, Chennai, which owns the factories.

“Our success secret is the topmost priority for quality attached by our trained and skilled workforce,” Mr Hegde told Business Line.

Chamraj also has canned-teas branded, Chamraj, Frost Tea, Green Tea, Decaffeinated Tea, Earl Grey and White Tea. White Tea is among the most-expensive brands priced at Rs 320 for a 50-gm can.

In the tea bag market, Chamraj has ‘masala’ flavour as well. Korakundah has orthodox green tea and organic tea packets. In the dip-tea segment, it has organic Nilgiri black and green tea bags. “Our organic teas have gained a niche in international markets,” Mr Hegde said.
