Pragmatic on oil

This refers to the editorial “Oil sense” (Business Line, June 24) . Indeed, there are several ways to reduce consumption, but the Government should take firm initiatives to enforce them. This process will also help in the reduction of greenhouse gases, a long-term requirement.

The Government should also take into account that the 40 per cent rise in the crude price will also correspondingly raise the revenue through import duties, and this amount can be reduced from the levies charged on the OMCs; this may give them some relief without affecting the government’s revenue.
