Cruise shipping policy okayed

New Delhi, June 26

To encourage cruise shipping, the Union Cabinet today gave its approval for adoption of Cruise Shipping Policy of India that envisages hassle free customs clearance, dedicated cruise shipping terminal, among others. ‘Cruise Shipping’ is fast emerging as a new marketable product, growing at the rate of 12 per cent a year globally, this sector has witness some activity in India as well in recent times. However, it is still in its infancy in India, said an officia l release. This industry annually generates $14 billion worldwide and enjoys a passenger base of over 10 million, which is expected to almost double by 2009. India’s share is only two per cent. As regards number of cruise ships, projections/forecasts are that the number will increase from the present 257 to 285 by 2009, said the release. India with its vast and beautiful coastline, virgin forests and undisturbed idyllic island, rich historical and cultural heritage, can be fabulous tourist destination for cruise tourists.
