Science & Technology National Aerospace reels under talent crunch NAL hopes the Sixth Pay Commission’s recommendations will bridge the wage disparity to an extent. Our Bureau Bangalore, June 27 Talent crisis has not left the CSIR’s premier aviation research hub alone. The Bangalore-based National Aerospace Labs, like its public-sector R&D peers, has also been hit hard by staff departures and senior scientists “who are retiring in droves.” This is again because of the bigger lucre that the private sector offers, NAL’s Director, Dr A.R. Upadhya, told a news conference. “Our domain expertise is going. NAL once used to be the preferred place for youngsters in colleges. Today we are not able to fill the vacancies. We have even lowered our standards,” Dr Upadhya regretted at the curtain-raiser meet on the international conference on aviation technologies. The lab, currently 1,300 strong with an annual budget of Rs 100 crore, has half a dozen projects such as civilian aircraft and other R&D work. In 2007, it barely got 60 candidates for 80 vacancies of scientist B and C and a dozen of them may already have left. Last month, 96 posts for the same cadre were called for but only 60 per cent could be filled. “Many have not yet joined and are still looking out,” he said. “No doubt we have to pay more. One solution is partnering with the private sector but that will also push up the costs,” he said. NAL hopes the Sixth Pay Commission’s recommendations will bridge the wage disparity to an extent.
