The Hindu Business Line : Kerala looking for tie-up with Kuwait Petroleum Company

The Kerala Government is looking forward to a long-term agreement with Kuwait Petroleum Company for supply of sulphur at affordable rates to the State-owned Travancore Titanium Products Ltd (TTP) as also to Fertilisers and Chemicals Travancore Ltd (FACT).

This was stated by the Minister for Industries, Mr Ealamaram Kareem, in the State Assembly on Friday.

Replying to questions, the Minister said that the Kerala Industrial Infrastructure Development Corporation (Kinfra) had signed 18 memoranda of understanding (MoUs) for a total investment of Rs 863.33 crore. Similarly, the Kerala State Industrial Development Corporation (KSIDC) had signed 64 MoUs, which were expected to bring in investments to the tune of Rs. 3,974.54 crore.

Work on these proposals was progressing, the Minister added.

Vizhinjam terminal

The Minister for Law and Ports, Mr. M. Vijayakumar, told the House that the work on Vizhinjam international container transhipment terminal would begin on getting the clearances of the Union Shipping and Transport, Home and Foreign Affairs Ministries.

Work on the first phase of the project would be completed within three years after signing the agreement. The project would provide direct employment to 3,000 persons and the allied sectors would generate around one lakh jobs.

He said that all requirements like customs clearance and plant protection quarantine had been provided for the development of Kollam as a major port. Also, talks were underway to attract shipping agents to the port.

The Minister for Water Resources, Mr N.K. Premachandran, said that 36 per cent of the work on JBIC-aided drinking water scheme had been completed and the scheme as such would be completed next year.

The department had formed anti-theft squads to prevent pilfering of drinking water in Thiruvananthapuram and Kochi, he said.
