Seminar on WTO impact on seafood

Our Bureau

Kochi, June 27

Recognising the importance of WTO regulations on the seafood trade, the Society of Fisheries Technologists (India) is organising a one-day national seminar on WTO and its impact on Indian seafood trade here on Saturday in collaboration with Central Institute of Fisheries Technology.

The seminar, to be held at the CIFT Hall, is expected to analyse the challenges faced by India and suggest ways to respond to them. The outcomes of WTO negotiations and other WTO-GATS related aspects will have implication on the marine exports from the developing countries in Asia and India in particular.

The changing regulations in the importing countries are likely to place new hurdles on the marine exports. The keynote address will be delivered by Dr Ramesh Chand, Professor, National Centre for Agricultural Economics and Policy Research (NCAP), New Delhi. Eminent persons in various fields will deliver lectures on various related topics.

The Society of Fisheries Technologists (India), set up to promote the cause of fisheries, is a forum of discussing problems in the field and for formulating solutions.

CIFT is a national institute working on all aspects of harvest and post harvest technologies in fisheries and is actively engaged in research related to the trade in seafood products.

Work on seasonal indices, market trends, capacity utilisation and policy issues are taken up by the socio economic group of the institute.
