Bengal truckers not to join transport strike

Our Bureau

Kolkata, June 30

The members of the Federation of West Bengal Truck Operators’ Associations will not participate in the nationwide indefinite transport strike from July 2, as called by the All India Motor Transport Congress.

In a statement, Mr S. Majumder, General Secretary of the federation, has stated that 18 district truck owners associations and 125 other associations, all affiliated to the federation, will stay away from the proposed strike, according to the decision taken at an emergence meeting here on Monday.

“The goods vehicles of our members will ply as usual throughput the State,” the statement observes.

Explaining the reasons for not responding to the strike called by AIMTC, Mr Majumder says that large areas in the State have been badly hit by floods, requiring urgent movement of relief materials for the flood victims. Transport strike in such a situation will only deepen the crisis, which the federation members do not want.

Also, the federation members are satisfied with the clarification on service tax givenby the Union Finance Ministry.

Goods transporters to participate

Meanwhile, Mr K.K. Bansal, Chairman, AIMTC’s eastern region co-ordination committee, and Mr Raja Roy, General Secretary, Calcutta Goods Transport Association, the association of road transport companies and affiliated to AIMTC, in a joint statement, have announced their members’ resolve to participate in the proposed strike in support of the demands raised by AIMTC.

According to a spokesman of CGTA, members of another transport association, namely, West Bengal Truck Owners’ Association, too, will participate in the strike.

“We will stop booking goods from July 2,” the spokesman adds.
