Opinion - Letters
Avoid intervention

The editorial “Retrograde step” (Business Line, June 30) rightly pointed out that the government would do well to stay away from the management of natural gas prices at the micro level.

The government must, at best, confine itself to formulation of overall polices at the macro level, leaving micro-management to the market and market forces.

Gas producers may be given full freedom to decide regarding such matters as price, to whom to sell, priorities of supplies, and so on.

The government may if necessary appoint a regulatory body for overseeing and also for off site supervision.

Such a regulator may issue the required operational guidelines and ensure conformity with accepted national policies and guidelines.
