Nabard preparing scheme for Sivaganga

Our Correspondent

Madurai, July 1 The National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (Nabard) is preparing a comprehensive development programme for the Sivaganga district. Speaking to Business Line on the sidelines of the foundation stone laying ceremony for the Rural Training Centre at Amaravathy Pudur, near Karaikudi, on Sunday, Mr U.C. Sarangi, Chairman, Nabard, said the programme was being discussed with the District Collector for implementation and non-government organisations would be involved in giving training to the people. He said the district was suited for the promotion of dry land horticulture and dairy farming. With 94 per cent of the farmers in the small and marginal category, a viable method to reap the benefits of horticulture would be joint liability farming as it would give them the strength to bargain. Farmers need to be educated in this respect and given training to practice new cultivation techniques like drip farming.

They could also avail themselves of the 50 per cent subsidy offered by the National Horticulture Mission.
