New Delhi, July 1

The Confederation of Indian Textile Industries today demanded that the Government should ban export of cotton exports till December-end and allow duty free import of cotton to bring down cotton prices. The Vice-President of the confederation, Mr Shishir Jaipuria, said that “Cotton exports should be banned immediately, and 14.7 per cent import duty should also be abolished.” Cotton prices have gone up by around 58 per cent since the start of the crop year in Oc tober. In September, cotton prices were at around Rs 18,000 a candy (1 candy = 356 kg), which is now being quoted at Rs 28,500 a candy, he said. —
