The Hindu Business Line : Nuclear deal

Much has been written on the benefits that a power-starved country like ours can derive from the nuclear deal, if signed in the present format. But nothing is being written on the losses our country suffered due to the Government’s indecisive approach in not signing the deal in time.

We have already lost around one and a half years from the day this deal was put forward for discussion. The situation created by the Government sometimes makes one doubt the gains our country may derive from the deal. If it is so important for the country to sign the treaty, let the leaders be bold enough to seal the deal without caring for the consequences, as those consequences will be temporary in nature and will benefit the ruling party in the long run.

The present government is competent enough to understand the needs of the nation and our voters are intelligent enough to understand the actions taken by the Government. Today, the nation feels that retaining power is the supreme aim of any Government and not the national interest.

The economy is already facing the heat of inflation. Inflationary pressures are having adverse effects on upcoming projects, including the much publicised power projects taken up in the last year or so. The shortage of uranium has made the future of our nuclear power projects uncertain. Under such circumstances, one fails to understand how we be able to fulfil the ever increasing demand for power without pursuing the deal.
