Trade & Labour Unions States - Andhra Pradesh Majority of trucks off the roads in AP Our Bureau Hyderabad, July 2 A majority of the 4.30 lakh lorries in Andhra Pradesh are off the roads, following the strike call given by All India Motor Transport Congress. The State operates nearly one-tenth of the 48 lakh-strong transport vehicles in the country. “We have begun talks with the Central Government in New Delhi,” Mr P Gopal Naidu, President of Andhra Pradesh Lorry Owners’ Association, told Business Line over phone from Delhi. He, however, felt that it might take some time before they arrived at a solution. Mr K Rajeshwar Rao, General Secretary of Twin Cities Local Lorry Operators Association, said that the strike was a success in the State Capital. They appealed to Dr Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister, to intervene in the issue and help find solution to their problems. They also asked him to direct the traffic police to issue local permits for lorries so that they could ply the vehicles unhindered. The Hyderabad Goods Transport Association too backed the strike. “Collection of toll tax even after the recover of the cost of roads put a huge burden on the transporters,” Mr Ram Kumar Rathi, Honorary General Secretary, said here in a statement. The State Motor Transport Operators Association said that it was not party to the strike. “ More Stories on : Trade & Labour Unions | Roadways | Andhra Pradesh
