Trade & Labour Unions No impact of lorry strike in eastern region Our Bureau Kolkata, July 2 The nationwide indefinite transport strike, as called by All India Motor Transport Congress (AIMTC) and which started on Wednesday, had no impact in eastern region, according to Mr S Majumder, General Secretary of Federation of West Bengal Truck Operators’ Associations whose members are not participating in the strike. “The loading and movement of vehicles in railway sidings, ports, markets places and seven border check-posts in West Bengal were normal,”, Mr Majumder said. The situation was normal in Orissa, Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh and in all north-eastern States, he said. “If West Bengal truckers stay away from the strike, there cannot be strike in other eastern States”, he added. The federation commanded the support of the operators of the largest number of vehicles – 167,000 out of the total vehicle population of 230,000 in the state, he said. ‘Not right time’With two districts having been badly hit by the floods, the federation felt, it was not the right time to go for an indefinite strike. Besides, the Union Government clarification of the service tax should put to rest all debates over it, Mr Majumder observed. A spokesman of Calcutta Goods Transport Association (CGTA), the association of transport companies and freight brokers, said that a clearer picture would emerge by Monday.
