Farm credit States - Andhra Pradesh Co-op banks identify 6.18 lakh farmers for debt relief Our Bureau Kolkata, July 2 The short-term co-operative credit infrastructure in the State comprising the West Bengal State Co-operative Bank, 17 district central co-operative banks and about 6,000 primary co-operative societies, has identified 6,18,807 borrowers eligible under agricultural debt waiver and debt relief scheme 2008. Out of these, 6,18,228 are small and marginal farmers who will get total debt waiver and 579 will be entitled to partial waiver, said a press release from the West Bengal State Co-operative Bank. Earlier, in June this year, at a meeting with Mr Sharad Pawar, Union Minister for Agriculture, the State co-operative banks had sought for more time for the preparation of list of eligible farmers because of severe flood in some districts and the uncertain situation in Darjeeling. The decision on this is still awaited, said the release. The banks also spoke to Mr Pawar about the exclusion of farmers who borrowed before April 1997. It was also demanded that in view of the poor resource position of co-operative banks, the Government should reimburse the waiver amount immediately and ensure that Nabard extends adequate liquidity support at a cheap rate of interest.
