Rlys rolls back hike in freight charges

The rate hike was to be on account of a ‘special supplementary charge’ that Railways had decided to levy.

New Delhi, July 3 In what could be termed as a move taken under political pressure, the Indian Railways has rolled back the 5-7 per cent hike in freight charges that it had planned to levy on several commodities from July 1.

A few days ago, Railways had issued a circular for hiking freight charges for ores and minerals, petro-products, coke and coal, fertilisers, foodgrains, and a host of other commodities by 5-7 per cent.

The rate hike was to be on account of a ‘special supplementary charge’ that Railways had decided to levy for the first time under its dynamic pricing policy — on the lines of busy season, busy route surcharge, and so on, which were imposed through circulars issued outside of the rail budget announcements.

On Wednesday, Railways issued another circular keeping the earlier circular (that had specified levy of the surcharge) in abeyance.

According to Railways’ earlier proposal, coal and coke were to attract a five per cent charge, while ores and minerals such as bauxite, calcite, limestone; and petroleum and lubricant products were to attract a seven per cent supplementary charge.

Railways had also decided to levy a seven per cent charge on all commodities that were charged in class 120 and below such as fertilisers, foodgrains, flour and pulses, oilcakes and oilseeds, leather, rubber, plastic, machinery and machine tools, and salt.
