Chennai, July 4 The video-frame shows a horse carriage being stopped at a check-post. You see guards with bayonets poking at the sacks in the carriage and being generally vigilant. After a few choice expletives, and explaining to the carriage driver that he could not take security lightly, they let him pass. And then you see the horse, which is only a couple of men made up to look like the animal, sneaking through. “Don’t let this happen to you” the text in the video screams at you. Mr Somasajeevan TK, EVP and Global Head, talent & change at Polaris Software Labs, hit the nail on the head with this video, as he chaired a session on “Trends in pre- and post-employment screening”, on the second and last day of Nasscom’s annual HR summit in Chennai. According to him, “Seventy five per cent of IT-related security breaches happen from within companies, while 6 per cent of annual revenues of global companies are lost due to fraud.” This leads us to the importance of screening of an employee’s personal and professional background. MisrepresentationAccording to Mr Ashish Dehade, Managing Director, First Advantage, a third-party background screening firm, “One third of all resumes has some piece of information or the other misrepresented. One fifth of this misrepresentation is to do with the employee’s background.” Misrepresentation of employment facts is highest among workers in the banking and financial industry — every third resume has this problem. In the IT industry, every fourth resume and in the ITES industry, every sixth resume poses this challenge to recruiters. Of resumes that are misrepresented, he said that 85 per cent are fake and at least 75 per cent have incorrect data with regard to tenures with previous employers. According to him, even as a company announces that it has a screening process in place, it discourages those with inaccurate data on resumes from applying. Considering that a company typically spends between 6 and 8 months of cost-to-company salary in training a new employee, it is critical to ensure that the employee’s integrity is intact, to begin with. Nasscom registryMr Raju Bhatnagar, Vice-President, Nasscom, the industry’s apex body, said that its National Skills Registry helps in background checks. About 3 lakh registrations have been done online so far. A panel of about 13 nominated members helps in checking the background and claims of those registered. Mr Bhatnagar said, “The process of verifying is simple. Once a background check is done, it eliminates the need to re-do it multiple times. He also clarified that employee data is not made available to a prospective employer, unless the employee chooses to allow access to that data. This helps protect privacy, he said.
