New Delhi, July 4

The Minister for Communications and IT, Mr A. Raja, on Friday said that the broad guidelines for Third Generation Mobile (3G) Services and WiMax have been formulated and would be sent to Telecom Commission in a week, after consultations with the Finance Ministry.

The Minister further said that the Government was looking at ‘third party solution’ to address security concerns related to Blackberry services.

Speaking on the sidelines of an event here, Mr Raja said that, “For 3G, broad guidelines have been devised. I need some consultation with the Finance Ministry and the PM…Some Finance Ministry representatives are also on the Telecom Commission.”

Following the consultations, the guidelines would be sent to Telecom Commission (the policy making wing of the Department of Telecom), in a week.

Blackberry issue

Responding to a query on the issue of Blackberry, Mr Raja said, “Blackberry cannot be thrown out, it cannot be ignored. The question is how to keep this service, while resolving the security concerns. We feel that the security concerns can be taken care of, with wider consultations.”

Asked about the status of the discussions on security measures with Blackberry licensor RIM, the Minister said, “Blackberry is offering solutions. We are also looking at solutions through other companies. Efforts are on.”
