Convergence Intel sees big market for mobile Internet device
Mr Narendra Bhandari T E Raja Simhan Chennai, July 4 Now that many manufacturers are ready with their ‘Mobile Internet Devices’, India may soon see the introduction of the product. Last month, Samsung, Acer, Lenovo and Compaq showcased their MIDs in Vietnam and it is learnt that a dozen other manufacturers are soon to launch their own. The MID is a palm-sized Internet-access device. Today, if you want Internet access while you are mobile, you have a few options — laptop, notebook or the Net-enabled mobile phone. The first two are too big to be slipped into your pocket; the mobile phone has too small a screen for comfort. But now, a device small enough to be carried in the shirt pocket and yet with a larger screen, is being introduced. The product is yet to be commercially launched globally and it is not yet clear as to when it will hit the Indian market. Mr Narendra Bhandari, Director, Software and Solutions Group, APAC, Intel, told Business Line that India would be a big market for the device. Around 200 million Indian mobile phone users will start using data services and access Internet for work and play, he said. What has made this device possible is Intel’s ‘Atom’ processor. The Atom is a very small chip, less than 2.2 cm square, but packs 47 million transistors and consumes very less power. Transistors let or prevent passage of electricity and hence are at the very heart of computing. The higher the number of transistors, the better the performance.
