Education States - Other States Haryana plans massive expansion of seats for technical education At least 50 private engineering colleges will be added this year to the current 62 engineering colleges in the State. Our Bureau New Delhi, July 4 The Haryana Government is scaling up its education infrastructure to meet the rising demand for technical and management educations. Besides increasing the number of seats for technical education, the State will also house northern India’s first Indian Institute of Management (IIM) in Rohtak. At least 50 private engineering colleges will be added this year to the current 62 engineering colleges in the State. Proposals for another 50 have already been received for 2008-09, the Haryana Chief Minister, Mr Bhupinder Singh Hooda, told reporters here on Friday. The Government is also looking to double the number of management institutes. “From 33,000 seats in technical institutes three years ago, Haryana today boasts of 52,000 seats. Our aim is to take this number to 1,00,000 by 2010. We are determined to establish Haryana as India’s show window for technical education,” he added. The largest number of seat additions will take place in the districts of Faridabad, Sonepat and Panipat. “We are looking at a 25-65 per cent increase in the number of seats in MCA, B. Pharma and hotel management institutes.” The Government has received proposals for an additional 22 in the district. The State is also looking to launch the Rajiv Gandhi Education City at Kundli in September later this year. “The Haryana Government has increased budgetary allocation to the Education Department from Rs 1,600 crore in 2004-05 to Rs 3,200 crore this year. We have also consciously deviated from the conventional approach and launched reforms in primary, secondary and higher education, the impact of which is already visible,” the Chief Minister added. He said the Government is also setting up India’s first Defence University in the State besides North India’s first Mahila Vishwavidyalaya (Women’s University) at Khanpur Kalan in Sonepat. On the State policy regarding special economic zones, Mr Hooda said the State has so far received 72 applications for setting up SEZs, of which 53 have already been approved.
