New Delhi, July 4 Truckers on Friday ended their nationwide strike after convincing the Government in overnight talks to concede to their demands. The striking transporters had raised issues relating to service tax on goods transport agency (GTA), toll charges, diesel and fitment of speed governors.

On service tax front, the Finance Ministry agreed that the August 2004 understanding would be the guiding principle and accordingly service tax under ‘GTA services’ would be levied on value added services provided by GTA. It has also been agreed that service tax under GTA services would be levied on 25 per cent of the “total amount charged” and all services relating to transportation of goods by road is to be levied service tax under GTA services only. Moreover, the departmental proceedings initiated against few GTAs would be dropped if they are found to be against the principles spelt out in the understanding reached in August 2004

On toll charges, it has been agreed to go back to pre-December 2007 rates for public funded roads. The hike effected in February 2008 would be kept in abeyance for a year.
