Coonoor, July 6 Prices managed to rise a rupee a kg on the average despite uncertainty in moving the teas to their respective destinations as Sale No: 27 of the auctions of the Coonoor Tea Trade Association (CTTA) was held amidst all-India lorry strike.

Considering that the volume of 13.81 lakh kgs offered was the highest for any single week in more than two years except the previous week, demand seemed to be adequate to push up the price.

Pakistan continued to be the mainstay in the CTC leaf market. It also lent useful support in the CTC dust market. It picked up blacker teas paying up to Rs 71 a kg.

CIS purchased blacker smaller sorts paying Rs 45 to 51. Egypt bought cleaner, blacker and finer teas paying up to Rs 60.

There was selective buying of medium brokens for Defence consumption. Hindustan Unilever Ltd. was active on better medium broken leaf teas. It did not operate in the dust sale.

“Brighter liquoring CTC dusts received good demand and sold dearer by Rs 2 a kg. Whole leaf orthodox teas gained Rs 2. Leafy brokens gained a rupee. Many teas managed to fetch last levels or a rupee more. But, better medium and medium bolder brokens in CTC leaf lost Rs 2-3. Browner sorts eased a rupee. Primary orthodox dusts suffered subdued demand and lost Rs 2. Some withdrawals were also recorded”, an auctioneer told Business Line.

Darmona Estate was the only brand in the Rs 100 category among the CTC teas from bought-leaf factories. Its BOPF grade leaf fetched Rs 100 a kg. Also, its PD grade dust fetched Rs 100. Homedale Estate got Rs 94, Kannavarai Estate and Hittakkal Estate Rs 87 each, Vigneshwar Estate and Professor Rs 86 each, Highfield Estate Special and Shanthi Supreme Rs 85 each, Sree Tea Supreme Rs 81, Aroma Estate and Ella Estate Rs 80 each.

Among the orthodox teas from corporate sector, Havukal and Chamraj got Rs 116 each, Mailoor and Parkside Rs 112 each, Glendale Rs 110, Tiger Hill, Craigmore and Pascoe’s Woodlands Rs 106 each, Kairbetta Rs 102, Colacombie and Corsley Rs 100 each.
