Hike in haulage charges

The Association of Container Train Operators is to shortly take up with the Railway Board the issue of across-the-board hike in haulage charges announced by the Railways. The revised rates, ranging from five to 15-16 per cent, depending on whether it is an empty box, or an empty flat or a loaded container with gross weight up to 20-tonne or more, will come into force from August 1. The container train operators feel that the proposed revisions are “steep” and a re, therefore, mulling to urge the Railways for complete rollback. The Container Corporation of India, Railways’ own subsidiary, which will also be a victim of the proposed revisions, is believed to have indicated that it would pass on the burden to the trade. The road transportation cost of the imports and exports to and from the inland container depots are up substantially. The hike in haulage charges for light weight cargo, it is felt, is surprising in view of the stiff competition the train operators are facing from the roadways. At a time when the government is seriously examining ways and means to curb inflation, the proposed upward revision, it is feared, will have the cost-push effect.
