Third bridge on Hooghly likely to reach traffic target

Our Bureau

Kolkata, July 6 Nivedita Setu, the third bridge on the Hooghly river and a vital link between National Highway (NH) 2 and NH 6, is expected to register a daily traffic of 20,000 vehicles by October, according to Mr S.S. Chakraborty, Chairman, Second Vivekananda Bridge Tollway Company and Managing Director, Consulting Engineering Services.

The daily total holding capacity of the bridge was 48,000 vehicles, he said, adding that the initial projection was to reach that volume within 22 years from now. However, going by the current rate of growth in the traffic, the target could be met much earlier, he said.

Mr Chakraborty said the bridge was a crucial link, which completed the circuit, connecting Kolkata Airport to Dankuni, Bali and Chandannagar, as well as linking Bardhaman and Durgapur to Kolkata.

Some of the commercial vehicular traffic on the Vivekananda Setu could also be diverted to Nivedita Setu, he said, easing congestion on the former.

Mr Ravindra Verma, Managing Director, of the tollway company said the consortium is also looking at opportunities in sectors such as airport, railway, port transit and elevated rapid transport system in the State.
