M. Ramesh Chennai, July 6 Public sector power equipment major, BHEL, is set to win the order for boilers for the 1,600-MW Krishnapatnam power project of Andhra Pradesh Power Generation Corporation Ltd (APGENCO). BHEL beat the L&T-Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI) joint venture to the order by a very slim margin, it is learnt. The order, worth Rs 2,500-crore, is significant because it comes close on the heels of BHEL losing the contract for supplying turbine-cum-generator sets for the same power project to L&T-MHI. According to Mr Ajay Jain, Managing Director, APGENCO, BHEL’s bid was only about Rs 100 crore lower than L&T-MHI — an indication of how keenly the battle for the contract was fought. BHEL is sitting on an order book of Rs 97,000 crore and losing an order somewhere is normally not a worry. But what rankled was the fact that it lost the bid to a newcomer, something that did not go down well in the industry. The bids for the supply of boilers for the Krishnapatnam was opened on Friday. The final value of the contract is being worked out by the project consultants, because some adjustments would need to be made to the bid value. The order is yet to be formally placed on BHEL, but now it is only a formality, sources said. More Stories on : Outlook | Electrical Goods | Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd
