Consumerism DGIR to probe bundling of gas stoves with new connection Our Bureau New Delhi, July 7 The Monopolies and Restrictive Trade Practices Commission has asked its investigative arm DGIR (Director-General of Investigation and Registration) to look into allegations that customers are being forced to purchase gas stoves while applying for new connections. According to the sources, the commission also suspects a collusion between the stove manufacturers, oil and gas companies, and dealers. According to the MRTP Act, any such sales tie-up that forces customers to buy a product from a particular company is anti-competitive and a restrictive trade practices. The MRTPC has issued an order of investigation to DGIR to file its report in 90 days. “Some gas dealers insist on consumers buying the gas stove or the hot plate with a fresh connection. This is a restrictive trade practice under Section 331 (B) of MRTP Act. Since the 1980s in almost 30 cases, cease and desist orders have been issued,” sources said.
