Shipping 12 major ports record 8.8% rise in throughput in first quarter
Our Bureau Kolkata, July 9 In the first quarter of the current fiscal (April to June 2008-09), the traffic throughput in 12 major ports posted 8.8 per cent growth at 133.88 million tonnes (mt) compared with 122.99 mt in the corresponding period of 2007-08. During the period under review, in volume terms, Kandla port continued to occupy the number one position with a total traffic throughput of 18.26 mt (15.51 mt), thus posting 17.74 per cent growth. However, in terms of growth, Jawaharlal Nehru port topped the list with 18.8 per cent at 14.97 mt (12.60 mt), though volume-wise, it was number three. In volume terms, Visakhapatnam, with a throughput of 17.05 mt (15.20 mt), ranked number two and, in terms of growth, Tuticorin – 18.42 per cent at 5.48 mt (4.63 mt). However, in volume, Tuticorin ranked tenth. In terms of growth, Visakhapatnam was sixth at 12.18 per cent and Kandla third at 17.74 per cent followed by Paradip (fourth) 17.3 per cent, and Mormugao (fifth) 16.15 per cent. In volume, Paradip ranked seventh with a throughput of 11.3 mt (9.63 mt) and Mormugao eighth with a throughput of 10.21 mt (8.79 mt). In volume, Chennai ranked fourth at 14.6 mt (13.68 mt), followed by Kolkata (including Haldia) 13.75 mt (13.37 mt). However, Chennai posted 6.72 per cent growth, while Kolkata a meagre 2.86 per cent. Ennore posted 8.08 per cent growth at 3.07 mt (2.84 mt). Negative growthThe three ports namely, New Mangalore, Mumbai and Kochi, posted negative growth. For New Mangalore, the decline was highest 8.91 per cent at 8.14 mt (8.94 mt), followed by Mumbai, 5.63 per cent at 13.12 mt (13.90 mt) and Kochi 1.3 per cent at 3.8 mt (3.85 mt).
