Chennai, July 9

The Rs 400-crore Nalli Group, synonymous with silk sari, has launched Nalli Next, its new retail initiative for the upscale market, offering apparels and soft furnishings. It is also foraying into the domestic home furnishing segment with its own brand - Next Living.

The first Nalli Next store in 4,000 sq ft was launched in Chennai (in Alwarpet) and the second store will come up in Bangalore in 15,000 sq ft, according to the group's President, Ms Lavanya R. Nalli. She declined to give financial details of the new venture saying it would take six months to understand the market requirements and plan the business strategy accordingly.

Nalli Next will offer a range of hand-picked, unique saris, including designer saris. The product range in the apparels includes dress for occasions like marriage and parties, and for corporate and casual wears. "We are moving according to the changing trends, aspirations and desires of women," she said.

Home furnishing

The group will launch its own home furnishing collection (called Next Living) for the domestic retail market through its Nalli Next stores. Nalli has an export production unit in Noida for home furnishings and supplying products to clients such asPottery Barn, Calvin Klein and House of Fraser. The unit will now produce for the domestic market as well.

The products will be mainly soft furnishings like bedspreads, curtain, table runners and cushion covers. The success of this venture will see Nalli setting up a number of smaller, dedicated home-furnishing outlets across India, in different retail formats, including malls, she said.

Expanding regular stores

The Chennai-based Nalli, an 80-year-old brand, is launching one more regular store in Chennai ("possibly in Tambaram") and one in Delhi (Greater Kailash). In the next six months, it plans to enter newer cities such as Kolkata, Pune, and Ahmedabad. At present, Nalli has 17 showrooms in India, two in the US and one in Singapore, she said.
