Diesel short supply hits fishing operations at Vizag harbour

— K.R. Deepak

Fuel crunch: Fishermen using the decks of mechanised boats for drying up fish in Visakhapatnam on Wednesday.

Our Bureau

Visakhapatnam, July 9 Diesel short supply is hitting the fishing operations in the Visakhapatnam fishing harbour and rationing system is being followed, with the recent two-day strike of truckers also compounding the problem.

Mechanised fishing boat operators are unwilling to buy diesel outside the harbour as it is not subsidised and they cannot sustain the operations at such a cost.

Subsidy to boat operators

Subsidy is given to the boat operators through the AP Fisheries Central Co-operative Federation for purchase of up to 3,000 litres per boat per month at the bunkering facility created by HPCL or IOC at the harbour.

If the diesel is bought outside the harbour, it will cost Rs 37.33 a litre or so, 10 to 12 paise more than in the harbour, and coupled with the transport cost it is proving too much, say the boat operators.

Over the past week or 10 days, oil companies are supplying only 30-40 kilo litres a day and each boat is getting only 500 litres.

Fisheries joint director, Mr Sivarama Reddy, has promised to sort out the matter with the oil companies. Mr P.C Appa Rao, President of the AP Mechanised Boat Operators’ Association, said the situation was very bad and the operators were not able to go on long fishing voyages and were forced to confine themselves to nearby places. Several of the 350 boats operating from the harbour here are lying idle. He appealed to the authorities to take immediate remedial measures.
